Red Sea goatfish

The Red Sea goatfish is a lessepsian migrant that was first seen in Cyprus in 2014. Since then it has established itself well in our waters and is currently thriving, posing a threat to native goatfish species such as the Red mullet. Its length is about 18cm although it can reach 26cm. It spawns during May to September and is usually caught accidentally using static nets. By choosing this fish you could help support fishing communities to make more of their catch and fish sustainably.
The fish behaves as an opportunistic predator, feeding on invertebrates such as small crustaceans and polychaetes. We highly recommend this species as it is tasty, healthy, and reducing its numbers will help the native species survive.
It is recommended to ask your fisher or fishmonger where the fish was caught and with which fishing method. Prefer locally harvested seafood products by coastal small-scale fisheries.
