Swordfish

The Swordfish is a migratory species and an opportunistic predator that searches for food from the surface to the seabed. Swordfish spawn in our waters from June through September, peaking the period from late June through August. It can exceed 4 meters in length and 500 kilograms in weight. However, swordfish caught in our waters rarely reach 100 kilograms. It is caught using drifting pelagic longlines, which are associated with bycatch of vulnerable species like sea turtles and sharks.
As most large fishes are being depleted in our oceans, there is a key measure in place for managing swordfish populations as well. A closed fishing season has been established by the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT). Regulations set catch quotas, minimum length and a three monththree-month closed fishing season.
The swordfish lives at depths ranging from 0 to 800 meters, though usually up to 500 meters. It feeds on fish and squid, which it first kills with the help of its sword. The sword is also used for defense. The swordfish has a reputation as an aggressive species, and there are several reports of swordfish attacking either boats or fishermen.
Although it’s one of the few fish species for which strict regulations exist, it is suggested to consume with caution as it bioaccumulates heavy metals which are harmful for humans. Prefer locally harvested seafood products by coastal small-scale fisheries, especially fishers collaborating with local conservation groups and demonstrating best handling practices for vulnerable species.
