About
SeafoodGuideCY is a bicommunal initiative created by SPOT and Enalia Physis, two environmental NGOs in Cyprus working towards terrestrial and marine conservation and protection.
About the project
The SPOTLight on Sustainable Fisheries project, which is funded by the European Union under the Aid Programme for the Turkish Cypriot community, was officially launched in August 2025, and will be a major step toward improving the sustainability, transparency and resilience of local fisheries.
Working with artisanal fishing communities in Cyprus and target groups across the island, the project will mobilise stakeholders around fishery policy implementation, strengthen scientific research, highlight the value of sustainable seafood, and investigate traceability gaps in seafood supply chains. Over its two-year duration, the project contributes directly to the European Union’s Green Deal objectives for healthier seas and sustainable coastal economies.

About the Guide
Through this guide, we encourage consumers to look more carefully at the seafood they buy and eat, enabling them to make informed, responsible, and confident choices that benefit both people and the sea.
Each species is categorized using a simple system:
- Recommended: Abundant, locally caught, low environmental impact, and healthy
- Buy with caution: Some concerns related to stock status, fishing method, ecosystem impact, or health
- Avoid: Overfished, high environmental impact, or high levels of contaminants
