European sea bass
Dicentrarchus labrax
Recommended
The European sea bass in Cyprus mainly comes from aquacultures. There are very few wild individuals, but usually sea basses caught by fishermen are fish that escaped from the aquacultures. Sea basses spawn during January, February and March. EU regulations set the minimum length for catches at 25 cm.
The European sea bass feeds on crustaceans and mollusks when young and mainly on fish once it reaches adulthood.
The aquacultures in Cyprus are considered some of the best in Europe, with high sustainability and technology standards, so the consumption of fish from them is recommended. However, in the northern part of Cyprus farmed fish is often sold as wild, so consumers are encouraged to demand proper labeling of farmed products to support fair trade. Prefer locally produced products and make sure your fish adheres to EU minimum size regulations.
