Striped bream
Lithognathus mormyrus
Caution
The Striped bream is native to our waters and spawns between May and September. Its length ranges from 15 to 30 centimeters, with a maximum of 50 centimeters, and its weight can exceed 1 kilogram. It matures at around three years old and is overfished due to its size so EU regulations set a minimum fishing size of 20cm. It is caught using longlines, static nets, trolling, vertical fishing, spearfishing and fishing rod from the shore.
Its diet includes worms, mollusks, and small crustaceans, which it traps by stirring up the sand and digging into the bottom with its snout.
It is recommended to ask your fisher or fishmonger where the fish was caught and with which fishing method, as well as buying this species outside of its spawning period. Prefer locally harvested seafood products by coastal small-scale fisheries and make sure your fish adheres to EU minimum size regulations.
