Lionfish

The Lionfish has become one of the most present fish in our waters, coming through the Suez canal around 2012 and increasing its population by 400% only during the years 2018-2020. Apart from a lessepsian migrant, it is also considered a highly invasive species as it feeds on small native species, has very few predators, and high reproductive rates. It can grow up to 43cm in length and live up to 14 years. It spawns all year round and is caught using spearguns and static nets. It is rarely targeted and is often caught accidentally. By choosing this fish you could help support fishing communities to make more of their catch and fish sustainably.

It lives at depths of up to 100 meters, preferring rocky and sandy bottoms, reefs and areas with abundant algae. It is carnivorous and a particularly effective hunter, as it feeds on small fish and crustaceans. All of its fins except its fin on the tail are poisonous and may cause injuries to humans, but once these are removed its meat is totally safe, and particularly tasty to eat. In recent years it has become a delicacy as it can be cooked in various ways including freezing, grilling or even made into carpaccio or sashimi.
