Common dolphinfish
Coryphaena hippurus
Caution
The Common dolphinfish is a pelagic species, well-known for its beautiful colors when alive, but also for the tenacity with which it fights when hooked. It is a fairly large species, as it can exceed 1 meter in length and 20 kilograms in weight, although in our waters it usually does not exceed 10 kilograms. The common dolphinfish reproduces in our waters during the spring months. It is caught using pelagic longline, trolling, and static nets.
It swims mainly in open waters and, at times, near the coast, from the surface down to a depth of 100 meters. It tends to form schools, although the larger individuals of the species live either alone or in pairs. It is an excellent hunter, lunging at its prey at lightning speed with speeds exceeding 40 knots. It feeds mainly on pelagic fish, squid, and crustaceans.
It is recommended to consume with caution as it may have higher bioaccumulation of contaminants due to its larger size and position in the food chain.
Check that your fish has not been spearfished. It is recommended to ask your fisher or fishmonger where the fish was caught and with which fishing method, as well as buying this species outside of its spawning period. Prefer locally harvested seafood products by coastal small-scale fisheries.
